Riverland

Clock on to 'river time'

The Riverland is where the cool waters of the Murray River feed wetlands and floodplain forests; where warm sandy landscapes are transformed into carpets of vineyards, citrus and almond groves.

Discover stories of bushrangers and ghosts at the Historic Overland Corner Hotel, see Australia's largest rose garden and sample delicious fruits, chocolates, nuts, lavender and wines.

Find the magic, and be surprised, in the Riverland.

Discover 'river time' in a houseboat on the Murray River, Riverland, South Australia

Discover ‘river time’ - a relaxed pace of living where the days stretch before you. Stunning conservation parks, a thriving fruit industry and the rush of water sports makes the Riverland the place to keep the family entertained.

Set your own pace

Hire a canoe or kayak and paddle your way through the secluded backwaters of the Murray River, exploring hidden secrets at your own pace, or take a guided tour. What you’ll discover will be truly breathtaking.

Captain your own houseboat and cruise past ochre-coloured steep cliffs and navigate through the oldest lock and weir system along the river. Dating back to the 1920s and 1930s, six locks in South Australia are still in use.

Sit back and relax on a luxury paddle steamer or chartered river cruise and take in the nature, history and culture of Australia’s greatest waterway.

With a number of historic working ferries, getting across or travelling along the river is easy. Today, 11 ferry crossings operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They’re free to use.

Good wine comes from good fruit

With irrigation from the Murray River and seemingly endless sunshine, the local produce in the Riverland is outstanding - whether it’s from a roadside stall or a local hotel.

Cool crisp winter mornings and mild sunny days produce the sweetest tasting navel oranges. In Berri, pick up olives, dukkah, quandongs and a bottle of wine at the largest winery and distillery in the southern hemisphere.

See how wine, food and the environment come together at Banrock Station.

Catch of the day

Fishing is a popular pastime and callop, also known as golden perch or yellow belly, is a good eating fish.

In the warmer months, try your luck at catching yabbies, which are often caught in the backwaters and creeks.

The Murray cod is legendary but it is also a protected species. Refer to PIRSA Fisheries for more information before you cast a line.

Set up camp along red gum lined creeks and river banks that stretch for thousands of kilometres. As night settles, cook your catch on a camp fire and bunker down for the night.

Living the (backpackers') dream

With endless sunshine, a laid-back lifestyle, great water sports and attractions, backpackers will see the real Australia in the Riverland.

The Riverland is South Australia’s largest fruit producing region and work is offered year-round, with seasonal work in orchards and vineyards. Backpacker hostels can be found in a number of Riverland towns, including Waikerie, Berri, Loxton, Kingston-on-Murray and Renmark.

One big playground

Whether your passion is trekking through national parks, photographing stunning native birds, marvelling at the history of paddle power, or simply playing a round of golf, find out why people keep coming back to the river.

Drop a line and relax on board a houseboat, visit rose gardens and a lavender farm, and get out on the water any way you can. Be sure to set your watch to ‘river time’ and enjoy the unexpected pleasure of a Riverland stay.
