Adelaide City Parks and Wildlife
Surrounded by parklands
Adelaide has a lot to be proud of; world-class wine and food and living history and heritage are only part of the story.
A belt of parklands surrounds the city and we treasure our wildlife.
Here you can see kangaroos and koalas, swim with dolphins and watch migrating whales. The bonus is there’s hardly any travel involved.
Adelaide has the only giant pandas in the southern hemisphere. Wang Wang and Funi are the Adelaide Zoo’s star attractions. Book a cruise to swim with dolphins, an experience you’ll never forget.
Zoos and wildlife parks
An hour’s drive up the South Eastern Freeway, Monarto Zoological Park is a massive conservation park and open-range zoo with animals from Africa and Asia.
Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary in the Adelaide Hills has more than 100 species of birds and native mammals. See cute bettongs and bandicoots and shy platypus on a dawn or dusk walk.
Feed kangaroos or hold a koala at Cleland Wildlife Park, where the animals are free to roam.
Gorge Wildlife Park has an exotic mix of animals including monkeys, meerkats, alligators and otters.
Wildlife tours
Kangaroo Island is the best place in Australia to see native wildlife in its natural habitat. Self-drive or choose from a variety of tours to see this magical place for yourself.
At Victor Harbor, an hour’s drive south of Adelaide, watch endangered southern right whales on their way to the spectacular Great Australian Bight to breed and calve.
Botanic gardens
Adelaide has three stunning botanic gardens in Adelaide, Mount Lofty and Blackwood.
Enter the Adelaide Botanic Gardens from North Terrace through a spectacular avenue of Moreton Bay Fig trees. Buildings like the 1877 glass Palm House and Amazon Waterlily Pavilion only add to beauty of this historical and exotic place.
The Rose Garden in the cool-climate Mount Lofty Botanic Garden is heritage listed. The Wittunga Botanic Garden in Blackwood shows the close relationship between Australian and South African shrubs and trees.
