Kangaroo Island Wine Region

You might visit Kangaroo Island for the wildlife but you’ll fall in love with the wine. It’s one of South Australia’s newest wine regions. The wines have strong fruit flavours and intense colours. Sample some at cellar doors.

Two Wheeler Creek Wines, Kangaroo Island, South Australia

Two Wheeler Creek Wines has the most westerly vineyard on the island. The cool climate conditions produce excellent white wines. The cellar door is at Parndana. Open for tastings seven days a week, enjoy a meal of fresh marron while you’re there.

More cellar doors

Bay of Shoals Wines has a maritime theme. It’s north of Kingscote, overlooking Bay of Shoals and Reeves Point. The cellar door is open seven days. Try Rosé, Sparkling Rosé and late harvest Riesling. The vines are hand pruned and the grapes are handpicked. This is a memorable wine tasting experience.

Dudley Wines is one of the island’s original wineries. The cellar door is open seven days. Drop in and taste the full range. Stay for the afternoon and relax on the deck overlooking Backstairs Passage (the section of water separating the island from the mainland). Indulge in a platter of regional produce.

Try False Cape Wines. The wines have excellent varietal characters and age well. The Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet are award winners. Tastings are available at the Kangaroo Island Seafront Resort in Penneshaw.

Something more spirited

For something different, try Kangaroo Island Spirits. It’s the island’s only boutique distillery. Its range includes six liqueurs, three vodkas and a premium gin. The cellar door is open Wednesday through Sunday.

Rookery Wines is a boutique winery. The Lovering family run it and they have lived on Kangaroo Island for three generations. Cellar door tastings are available at Emu Ridge Eucalyptus and Craft Gallery.

Sunset Winery is one of the island’s oldest. It’s set amongst native bushland. There are birds, kangaroos, goannas and echidnas. Try wine and enjoy a light lunch. Relax on the all weather deck. The cellar door has sea views over Eastern Cove and beyond. It’s open daily.

Wine tasting on Kangaroo Island, it doesn’t get better than this.
